Gallery of Breezers is Open!

Gallery of Breezers is Open!

We had a great gallery opening last month. The estimate was we had about 200 visitors(!) during to 2 hour event. The artists exhibiting/attending included Prescott Hill, Gregory Christie's mentee, Danielle Glover, Laura Freeman, Sara Cramb, Leighanne Schneider, and Mark Braught.

Susan Needs had a family emergency, and wasn't able to attend. Melissa Shultz-Jones could not attend either. She sent Prescott an image of her piece. He had it printed and framed it up so she could still have skin in the show.

Joe and Zack were outstanding hosts! Visitors love the art and the food, and there was a lot of interaction our artist and curious visitors.

Joe and Prescott talked briefly about expanding the show opening next year to include more space, a possible connection with the children's book area, and maybe having illo/authors do a reading for kids.

The after party is perhaps the best thing of the night.

This was the last time Elizabeth would be among us as artist and friends before she headed to VA then to Scotland.

"Something that was particularly bittersweet for her and me." said Prescott. "Gathering at the restaurant was a bonding experience for all of us to share stories, aspirations, and reconnect. I find it personally hard to claim ownership for such a successful event. It was a team effort. I could not pull it off without all the support from you, Joe, and our fabulous illustrators. It was very clear to me, looking at all of those at the table, that I am Papa Bear to them and the training wheels are off. I love my illustrators.

"I'm wondering if we could duplicate this event at a library in the Birmingham area, in conjunction with a larger event/festival? "

THE CURE FOR THE MID-YEAR DOLDRUMS

I don’t know about you, but this is the time of the year when I reality check my New Year’s Resolutions. Here we are almost half way through the year and I’ve yet to start and finish the next Hunger Games, or Harry Potter. My vow to get up at 5:00 am every morning for an hour of uninterrupted keyboard clacking was broken before Valentine’s Day, and I just haven’t seemed to be able to get myself back into the routine. Writing has not become the priority I promised myself it would be in 2015.

Well, fellow Breezers, if you’re suffering from the same lack of ability to focus, Southern Breeze has the just what you need to prod you back onto the path of writing righteousness in time for you to accomplish at least some of those pesky resolutions.  Join fellow SCBWI members in an unstructured, working weekend retreat July 16-19, 2015 at the historic Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, AL. With Check-in after 12:00 pm Thursday, July 16, 2015, and an extremely affordable meal plan, you can spend the long weekend dedicated to revising those pesky pages, originating an new book outline, doing writing exercises designed to jump-start your creativity, or whatever you have on that To-Do List that’s been shouting for attention from the back of your mind.

Just as importantly, you can exchange pages for feedback with other writers, and expand your connections. Need a critique group? Well, this mid-year retreat maybe the way to find those of like-genre and mind.

Come to Southern Breeze’s mid-summer retreat, and you’ll find the cure for the  mid-year doldrums is to get together with your tribe, make new friends, find new critique partners, and otherwise re-dedicate yourself to your writing so that when the Peach-ball drops at 12:00 am, January 1, 2016 you look back at 2015 as the year you got things done!

T. K. Read, Critique Group Coordinator, Southern Breeze

Book Inspiration for Nancy Miller's Goodbye Gloomies

Book Inspiration - Nancy Miller & Goodbye Gloomies

The inspiration for illustrating Goodbye Gloomies came from my friendship with author, Heather Tietz. We’ve know each other since 2009 when I was signed as the illustrator for her picture book Yes, Jesus Loves You (Ambassador Books). I’d gotten to know her through email and promoting the book. We decided on a joint submission. This isn’t a common practice in the business, but we both shared a mutual respect for the others work. She decided to send me some of her recent writing, and I settled on Goodbye Gloomies to illustrate. I showed her various character development sketches. When we both agreed on what the Gloomies should look like, I began storyboarding. We sent it off to Guardian Angel Publishing and they released the book in March 2015. We continue to share marketing efforts and ideas on this new book and it’s been a fun journey.
