E. B. Lewis will host several workshops during WIK'15:

• Writing with Pictures: Exploring Visual Language and How It Relates to Illustrating Picture Books  
  Art is a language, and writers and illustrators are the same people, all trying to create art that captures people’s imagination. Whether we’re using paint or words, we’re both making pictures that tell stories.
  AUDIENCE: Illustrators, all levels. 
• Who’s the Boss? The Role of Editor, Author, and Illustrator   (w/ Kaylan Adair & Hester Bass)
  Learn from the experiences of Candlewick Press editor Kaylan Adair, author Hester Bass, and illustrator E. B. Lewis about the process of successful collaboration that creates rewarding relationships and award-winning books.
  AUDIENCE: Writers and illustrators, all levels.  

E. B. Lewis will also host an Intensive Illustrating workshop on Friday, October 16,2016

ABOUT E. B. LEWIS:

“Artistrator” E. B. Lewis is a graduate of the Temple University Tyler School of Art and has illustrated sixty-five books for children. A member of The Society of Illustrators in New York City, he is the recipient of several Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards, ALA Notable Book awards, and other honors including the Caldecott Honor for Coming on Home Soon, written by Jacqueline Woodson. Lewis is a master at identifying the emotion and story in text and showing it in the illustration. He tells stories through his fine art as well; his beautiful watercolor paintings are owned by numerous private collectors and sold by art galleries throughout the world. He taught art in public school for twelve years, and continues to teach at the University of Arts in Philadelphia. He also privately mentors illustration students. No matter what level of mastery an artist has achieved, Lewis can help to push the craft high.

 Harold Underdown will host several workshops during WIK'15.

• Getting It Out the Door: Are Your Synopsis and Cover or Query Letter Ready? (REPEATS)
  Your manuscript is done. Now you’ll need to write a dreaded “query letter” and, if it’s a novel, a synopsis. Later, if the manuscript is requested, you’ll need a cover letter to go with it. In this workshop, learn what to do and what not to do in a query letter, how to put together an effective synopsis, and the simple requirements of a cover letter. You’ll also learn what struggles with drafting a query letter may say about your manuscript. We will use student examples. if you would like your query letter or synopsis to be critiqued (anonymously) please submit it by September 15, 2015 (submission information supplied after registration). 
  AUDIENCE: Writers and illustrators, all levels. 
• Choosing a Publishing Path: Self vs Traditional
  There are more publishing options available than ever before—but which one is right for you? Join two publishing veterans (editor and hybrid author) as they examine the advantages, disadvantages, and requirements of self- and traditional publishing to help you decide which is right for you or for your manuscript.
  AUDIENCE: Writers and illustrators, all levels.
• How Do I Find a(n) Editor/Publisher/Agent?
  You’re ready to send your manuscript out, but where? I’ll guide you through online, print, and in-person resources, culminating in the arcane art of catalog analysis, to teach you what you need to know when researching submissions options. 
  AUDIENCE: Writers and illustrators, all levels.

ABOUT HAROLD UNDERDOWN:

Harold Underdown is an independent editor and publishing consultant; he does critiques, helps to develop manuscripts, and provides other editorial and consulting services for individuals and publishers.

Harold enjoys teaching, and in that role wrote The Complete Idiot's Guide to Children's Book Publishing, now in its third edition. He founded and runs "The Purple Crayon," a respected web site with information about the children's publishing world at www.underdown.org. He speaks and gives workshops through the Highlights Foundation, SCBWI's national and regional conferences, and Kid’s Book Revisions (offering online and on-site tutorials, webinars, and workshops in partnership with Eileen Robinson).
As an in-house editor, he worked at Macmillan, Orchard, and Charlesbridge, and has experience in trade and educational publishing.

Registration has now opened for the WIK '15 conference for SCBWI members!!!

Don't wait until the workshops you want to attend are full - attendance for many is limited to only 25, and there is Something for Everyone! From beginners to pros, from picture book writers and illustrators to "new adult" authors, craft, marketing, from how to find an agent, to maintaining that relationship once it is established.

Springmingle'15 Faculty member, Art Director Guiseppe Castellano, has written a great article about attending SCBWI conferences.

“You should attend an SCBWI conference.” 
At some point in our journey as authors and illustrators, we hear this piece of advice. But what does it mean? How should we prepare for a conference? How do we engage the faculty? What can we realistically hope to gain? In this post, ten veteran faculty members and I share our tips on attending a Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators conference.

Faculty member Meg Medina is one of the contributors to this article and she talks about her experience at our Southern Breeze spring conference.
