In honor of our dear friend, Liz Conrad, the Southern Breeze chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustratorsestablished the Liz Conrad Conference Tuition Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to one budding illustrator in the children's book field and includes tuition to the annual conference and to Illustrators' Day or the Illustrators' Intensive, depending on the conference that year. In 2017 the winner will also receive a mentorship with the judge, Loraine Joyner.

This scholarship is open to Southern Breeze SCBWI members only and would be an impressive honor to add to one's resume.

Come Make Your Illustrations Soar with Loraine Joyner

Southern Breeze is pleased to announce that Loraine Joyner, former Art Director for Peachtree Publishers, will be the judge for the Liz Conrad Scholarship for Springmingle and Illustrators Day '17, and will participate in the Quickfire Portfolio review on Illustrators' Day. She will also be available for private portfolio reviews.

An added bonus for this year's Liz Conrad Scholarship includes a mentorship with Loraine for the winning illustrator. The winner of the scholarship will work with Loraine to complete the following in accordance with specified formatting and deadlines:

● a picturebook storyboard, including main character sketches and selection

● roughs for a selected scene

● final drawing of a scene

● final finish of a scene

● 3 character finishes of the main protagonist showing 3 distinctly different emotions, each from a different angle or point of view, but with no settings or secondary characters

The Mentorship will include meetings in person, skype, email or phone and will reflect what it would be like to work with an AD on a picture book project complete with required format specifications and deadlines to meet.

What an amazing opportunity for a lucky illustrator!

This is a reminder of our yearly contests. Southern Breeze hosts a writing and illustrating contest, with winners to be revealed at WIK, and encourages our members to participate.

DEADLINE IS JUNE 30TH

Announcing 8 on Eight!

As writers, we all know how important it is to polish our opening lines. But that’s sometimes easier said than done. How do we know we’ve hooked the reader? How can we be sure an editor is going to fall in love with our material? (At Spring Mingle, Senior Editor Stacey Barney said she knows on the first page if she’s going to offer on a manuscript––the very first page!).

Don’t panic!  8 on Eight is here to help. Designed by members of The Winged Pen, this monthly contest is designed to give one lucky kidlit (PB, MG, or YA) writer feedback on his or her opening 8 lines from at least eight experienced writers.

To enter this month’s contest, simply leave a comment on their blog, after 8 pm est tonight. But hurry! Entries will be drawn from the Triwizard cup at 8 pm on May 1^st.

Have You Sent Yours in Yet?

That's Gladys, looking for inspiration. (Don't laugh--she beat me last year.)

So you read the title of this blog post and thought, what is Cathy talking about now? Because it’s always something with me, I know, but this is a BIG something: the Southern Breeze Writing and Illustration Contest!

Here are the quick need-to-know details:

*The contest is open to Southern Breeze members and the year’s previous conference attendees only.

*Entries are accepted ONLY during the month of June! Technically, till midnight on June 30th Central Time.

*You do not have to be present to win. (Winners are announced at the fall conference.)

*You’ll receive feedback from judges on every entry. (But you may only send in one entry per contest. The writing and illustration contests are separate contests, so if you are a writer and illustrator, you can send in an entry to each contest. Also, the entry must be uncontracted and unpublished. If an entry receives a contract after it’s been sent in for the contest, it’s no longer eligible for the contest. After all, a contract trumps a contest win!)

*If you’re a writer, you’ll want to get more information here. And if you’re an illustrator, check out the prompt and details here. Please follow ALL the directions so your entry qualifies for the contest, and send in your very best work!

If you win First Place in the contest, you’ll receive FREE tuition to the next year’s fall conference! But honestly, everybody’s a winner in these contests. They’re free to enter and you’ll receive valuable feedback on your work, feedback that you can build on to take that entry all the way to publication!

Yep, previous Southern Breeze winners—from 1st Place to Honorable Mentions—have gone on to be published in some of the biggest houses in our children’s industry. Which brings me back to my original question, y’all: Have you sent yours in yet?
