"Something for Everyone!" 30 Days of WIK15 - Stephanie Moody

"Something for Everyone!"
30 Days of WIK15 - Stephanie Moody

One hat, two hats, old hats, new hats!

Hats! and changing them…that’s what led me to my role as WIK conference coordinator two years running, and kept me early on as a volunteer in a variety of other SCBWI Southern-Breeze conference positions.
I like changing hats and roles. Some of the most memorable include break room tidy-upper (yes, there really was such a role), registration desk worker (great way to meet conference participants), airport driver (allows a little one-on-one time with a speaker), angel (lots of one-on-one time), and even conference photographer (little time to do anything else but snap those pictures).
No doubt my varied participation and happy willingness to wear any volunteer hat is what landed me with the hat of Conference Coordinator — that and I think no one else volunteered.
It’s definitely not a sequined, glamour hat because much of the work is done under one’s hat e.g. out of the limelight — from corresponding with potential speakers, to keeping the RA informed, to making sure every one of those crucial volunteer positions is filled.
This year a “top down” organizational structure paved much of the process. Key positions from PAL coordinator, to Angel appointer, to volunteer organizer fell under the guidance of seasoned volunteers.
That means a lot of my work is done by others. I just bring them together under one hat, tie the loose ends together, and make sure the “show goes on” no matter what glitches might occur.
Time will tell if there are any. Maybe you could report back, too. We’d love to know more about your conference experience.  How it fulfilled your expectations! How it inspired you to improve your craft. How the conference could be improved!
After all, we host the conference for you: the aspiring writer and illustrator who want to hone your craft and develop, if not the great American novel, at least the greatest story you are capable of telling.
That’s a hat trick we all aspire to…
Hope to see you at WIK ’15. Do seek me out and introduce yourself and tell me how you’d like to volunteer next year.
There’s always room for more volunteers under the big dome, the Conference Hat.

Tracey M. Cox will host a workshop during WIK15:
  • Marketing and Platform: Building Your Name
Marketing and Platform Building  can seem overwhelming even to the best of us. There is a website to build and maintain, blogging to be done, social media to interact with, and face-to-face contact that is equally important. Don't forget we still need to squeeze in writing drawing.

I have learned you can do all this and still have time to hang with the family and get your house in order. *amazing, I know*

I'll share my secrets at #WIK15 during my Marketing and Platform: Building Your Name workshop. During this session you'll learn what you need to do and continue to do to build a platform that will allow you to market yourself and your books in the future... with little to no money.

You can find me online (say hello!!!!) with the links below AND don't forget that all important face-to-face contact at the conference. I'm the short one with really puffy, curly hair.  ;)

"Something for Everyone!" 30 Days of WIK15 - Jo Kittinger

"Something for Everyone!"
30 Days of WIK15 - Jo Kittinger

I remember my early days of writing for children. There was so much to learn!

As a potter, I knew all about making ceramics. I knew the qualities that made for good clay, and knew the multiple steps required to go from raw clay to glazed pot. But when I decided to try writing for kids, I was clueless. I knew which books I enjoyed, but I couldn't really tell you why. And I had no idea how to present my writing to publishers.

Through classes, my critique group, and talking with SCBWI members, I gradually grew in my knowledge. With time, perseverance, and lots of polishing of manuscripts I eventually gained publication in a wide variety of genres.

My workshop at wik'15, The Rules of the Game, offers a crash course in foundational information about the world of publishing in the children's market. We will look at the various divisions within the genre of children's literature and talk about what makes them distinctive. I will share some do's and don't's when you submit your manuscripts. From my personal experiences, I will discuss how to approach agents and editors, both in person and through submission pipelines.  A question and answer segment will allow me to address attendees unique concerns.

Whether an individual wants to write poetry, short stories, picture books, nonfiction, novels, magazine articles or illustrate, my hope is that this workshop will prepare first-time attendees with the basic knowledge they need to make the most of the remainder of the conference.

ABOUT JO KITTINGER:

Jo S. Kittinger is an award-winning author of more than 25 books for children, plus numerous items in various books, magazines and newspapers. Her nonfiction picture book, ROSA'S BUS: THE RIDE TO CIVIL RIGHTS received a Crystal Kite award. Her fictional picture book, THE HOUSE ON DIRTY-THIRD STREET, received two prestigious honors: a Christopher Award, which highlights media that "affirms the highest values of the human spirit," and a Social Justice Literature Award from the International Reading Association. "Something for Everyone!" Days of WIK15 - Heather Montgomery

"Something for Everyone!"
30 Days of WIK15 - Heather Montgomery

Heather Montgomery will host several workshops during WIK15:
  • Breaking Barriers: New Nonfiction
Outrageous illustrations, irreverent voices, marginalia – this isn’t your grandma’s fiction! The confining walls of humdrum nonfiction are being chipped away by one boundary-pushing book after another.  In this session, we will examine our own perceptions of what nonfiction content is and how, by pushing the walls out of our way, we can re-imagine where children’s nonfiction can go in the future. Throw off your blinders! You have the opportunity to forge a new path, to write the next break-out book, to set the new standards. Here is your chance to expand your ideas on voice, structure and format -- see where you go by breaking the barriers!
You will learn: an outside-the-box approach to subject matter, an exercise to stretch your voice, and visual thinking tools.
  • School Visit Success!
How can you captivate kids? Please the principal? And teach the teachers? School visits offer opportunities to promote your books, reach a broader audience and generate income. But, in order to be relevant in today’s educational climate, your programs must speak to all three audiences: students, teachers and administration. How can you do that? What steps do you need to take to plan your visit, prepare for your presentation, and execute with style? During this workshop, you will see a sample, discuss issues you have and begin to formulate a plan for your own visits.  You will learn: How to recruit school visits, dig into curriculum standards, and please all three audiences (students, educators, administrators).

"Something for Everyone!"
30 Days of WIK15 - Lisa Lewis Tyre

Lisa Lews Tyre will host a workshop during WIK15:
  • Rocking Your Social Media
No matter where I am, or what I’m doing, someone wants to talk about social media. I guess with over one BILLION Facebook users, 540 million active users on GooglePlus, 225 million Twitter accounts, and 200 million users of Instagram, it’s on a lot of people’s minds.

Or it could be that I’m a Social Media Evangelist and I’m the one always bringing it up. Whichever. I can’t help it. I LOVE social media, and despite the large numbers of people using it, you can still make great, authentic connections without spending every waking minute in front of the computer.

This year I’ll be presenting Rocking Your Social Media at Wik15 and if I do it well, it’s going to be fun, useful and interactive – just like good social media! Together we’ll discuss good/bad social media practices, time management tools, the most popular platforms, connecting with influencers, etc. There may even be prizes.

In between marketing my debut book and writing my next one, I spend my time blogging, posting, and tweeting for a variety of clients, and consulting with those who want to do it themselves. Trust me when I tell you, this CAN be fun.

Hanging out at the SCBWI Southern Breeze conference will be great, but we don’t have to wait until then to connect. Follow me on twitter @lisalewistyre and let’s get social!

Of course, we can always go old-school and talk face-to-face at the conference. Find me! I’ll be the one with the selfie stick.
ABOUT LISA LEWIS TYRE:

Lisa Lewis Tyre is a middle grade author (Last In A Long Line of Rebels, Nancy Paulsen Books) a frequent contributor to The Huffington Post, a founder of the multi-author blog, Middle Grade Mafia and a social media evangelist! Follow her on twitter!
